ARMY PRE SCHOOL EDUCATION COUNCIL (APEC):
One of the charters of duties of AWWA is to ensure quality of education for children up to primary level. An apex body called Army Pre School Education Council (APEC) was constituted in Oct 2005 to standardize and improve the quality of education in Army Nursery and KG Schools. The programme comprised of two parts. Firstly, to develop a very scientific and systematic curriculum based on the Early Childhood Care and Education (ECCE) concepts. Secondly, to train the teachers in the concepts of ECCE. AWWA collaborated with NCERT for training of teachers. About 1200 teachers of Nursery and KG were trained systematically by AWWA with the help of ECCE experts all over the country. About 22 training capsules were conducted in various military stations to train the teachers. AWWA arranged and organized these workshops with the help of ECCE experts of Dept of Elementary Education.
After two years of efforts and hard work, new curriculum for lower and upper KG was implemented from April 2007. A feedback seminar was also conducted in Oct 2007 where in principals and teachers from various commands were invited. The feedback was very positive with 85% satisfaction level. Certain midcourse corrections were also given to the schools. Besides this, APEC Council also decided to standardize the fee structure, salary structure, school name and school uniform of the schools. Instructions to this effect have already been issued to the formations and schools. The implementation of new programme will benefit more than 300 Schools in which almost about 60,000 children of soldiers are studying. The curriculum implemented is an attempt by AWWA to provide quality education to a soldier’s child, who otherwise can ill afford to teach his child in expensive private schools. The ECCE concept emphasizes on child centric, activity based learning approach where in each child is considered special and his strengths are honed up and weakness are eliminated. The approach has been shown very effectively in the movie “Tare Zamin Par” by Mr Amir Khan.
