Over a decade ago in 1991, a group of very inspired people had a beautiful vision and like a ray of hope ‘Asha’ was born. Asha is a school for children with special needs. From the time of its inception, up till now, the school has proceeded step by cautious step to contribute to and improve the quality of life for these children and their parents. Today, there are 132 students at Asha School.

Asha School has been established at Various Army stations since 1991 under the aegis of local formation headquarters or the local AWWA. Presently there are a total of 29 Asha Schools.

Purpose of Asha School is to provide rehabilitation, training facilities to disabled children of Army personnel, ex-servicemen and civilians to make them a useful and independent number of society. This includes education, therapy, vocational training, games, sports and excursions.

The Asha School are managed by local AWWA and controlled by the Central AWWA. Administrative support for these school is provided by nominated field units or static units at different stations.

Since 1991 Asha School were being funded out of contribution from local formation headquarters, local AWWA, sale of Asha Cards, fees from students and donations from other agencies. In 1999 schools getting grants from the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment (MOSJE). Shortfall in the grants from the MOSJE are being met the local formations through their Welfare Funds.

The Grants is given on basis of applications submitted the MOSJE through Army Welfare Society (CW-5). The grant is given in two parts as first and second installment. The applications are to be submitted by 30 Jun for first installment and by 30 Sep for second installment. The first Installment is generally given by end of Sep and second is given by Mar or April. As per MOSJE the expenditure of recurring nature can be paid from money taken as loan from Regimental funds/any other source and later returned from the grant. The grant for non recurring nature can be expenditure is not expended during the financial year then the same is deducted in the next financial year.

Second and final installment is given by the Ministry on receipt of inspection reports from the Inspecting Agency nominated by them. For a new project, the Ministry sanctions the first grant after two year from the date of Registration and inspection.
