A strong sense of responsibility for the well being of the soldier and his family, constitutes a pivotal and sacrosanct aspect of army life at all levels of military command. In this endeavour the commander has traditionally received unstinting support from his wife .
The urge for the welfare of army families began soon after independence, and the movement grew steadily in strength and scope.
The Army Wives Welfare Association Was officially registered as an NGO with the Registrar of Societies, Delhi Administration in August 1966. A voluntary organization, AWWA aims at the holistic development and well being of army wives and children, as well as the rehabilitation of war widows.
At the organizational apex is the President AWWA, who is the wife of the incumbent chief of Army Staff. The President AWWA sets guidelines and gives impetus at the highest level, dealing personally with intractable cases. Down the family tree are the presidents of Regional AWWAs at the level of the Army Command, below which function all the Corps and Divisional AWWAs. Each of these provide maximum facilities in army cantonments for the benefit and empowerment of army wives.
An army Regiment or Battalion is the nucleus in the army structure, and it is here that the grassroots welfare actually takes place at Family Welfare Centers, under the benign eye of the vital link, who, along with her team of ladies, maintains close and constant interaction with the families of soldiers. AWWA aims to achieve a secure and fulfilling community life, thus giving the soldiers the confidence of effectively perform his duty towards the country, with the certainty of ensured welfare for his family.
