Prerna
|
Prerna is an emotional support group at the Army Hospital
R&R, for patients suffering from cancer. It has officers' wives from the
Army, Navy, and Air force as volunteersy low, comfort and reassure them. We
also advised on the importance of a balanced diet, good hygiene a, Our
volunteers visit all the Oncology Wards and the OPD to counsel the patients
when they feel emotionallnd are counseled on how to cope with chemotherapy,
radiotherapy, surgery and other treatments, Talks, seminars and workshops are
held regularly to educate patients, We also have activities like drawing,
painting, tambola, puppet & magic shows and story telling to keep the
children occupied. Fun parties are held to bring happiness in the lives of
patients undergoing treatment.
Prerna was formally inaugurated by Mrs Padhmanabhan, President AWWA on 21 st
Nov 2002 . Mrs Harsimrit Takhar was appointed the chairperson, Mrs Neerja
Desai, Mrs Rita Rao and Mrs. Geetanjali Joshi were the coordinators from the
army, Navy, and the Air Force respectively and Mrs Rita Bhalla the secretary. A
lot of achievements were made in the years that Mrs Takhar was the Chairperson.
She was actively involved in all the activities and was instrumental in setting
up the basic infrastructure, which can be seen today. The major ones being the
setting up of library, games club, tambola for patients. Handouts were printed
on chemotherapy, radiotherapy and general awareness. Mrs Desai, co-coordinator
Army was the key person in designing of logo for the Prerna and printing of
letterheads and cards. Badges and certificates for volunteers were also
introduced by her in consultation with the committee. We helped equip the
Oncology department with lots of gadgets and computers.
Mrs Varinder Bahia was appointed the next chairperson (Feb 2004-Feb 2005) and
Prerna scaled new heights. Awareness lectures at AWWA, NAWWA & AFWWA
welfare centers were conducted. We also organized blood and platelet donation
by units on a fortnightly basis. The patients/caretakers were helped to get 72
married quarters as temporary accommodation from HQ Delhi Area. We also helped
getting postings/attachment to Delhi to the Outstation persons. Every possible
help is given to caretakers and family members in case of patient's death.
Prerna has assisted in setting up the Stem Transplant Centre and special
counseling is given to patients who have to undergo Stem Transplant. Mrs Mina
Singh was appointed the chairperson in February 2005.
